with raising the debt ceiling without demanding cuts in social security and cuts in medicare? no way. trust me. within a couple of weeks, the white house is going to be coming back and saying maybe we ought to do that trillion dollar coin after all. we will talk about that and more here but first take a little time out to get the latest. today's currents news update this morningnday morning. lisa ferguson has it out in los angeles. >> hey, bill. good morning, everyone. vice president joe biden is meeting with the house today getting ready to, to put together that list of recommendations to curb gun violence. there is one point where both sides agree, punishing people who lie on their background checks. until 2010, nearly 80,000 people were denied guns for lying or giving inaccurate information about their criminal history. but, only 44 of those people

were actually charged with a crime. this is one of the issues joe biden's task force is looking at and we can last timing expect his plan to include a stronger focus on background checks. those recommendations to the president could come as early as tomorrow. the group is also looking at mental health treatment, violence in video games and movies and a potential ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazine clips. the nra is, of course showing strong obviouspposition to. this yesterday ocnn's face the nation, group president david keen said an assault weapons ban will not make its way through congress. keen also reinforced his earlier stand he will not compromise second amendment rights but he did say he would support a data base from mentally i will people top prevent them from buying a firearm liberal think tank is giving recommendations that includes 13 items and that does include universal background checks. we will be right back.

full confession, it's only going to drag out longer. >> they are billing it as a limited confession. is he trying to get like a contributorship on fox news? i don't quite understand you know. >> bill: i don't get it. all right. now, here in our nation's capitol, the battle continues, a big story, over the nomination of president obama's nomination last week, a week ago today when he nominated chuck hagel as his next secretary of defense. that dominated the sunday talk shows. before we get into it, the one who made the most headlines on this, not john mccain. the idea that every sunday talk show feels that they have to book john mccain every sunday is -- i am so sick of it. common. you know he will say something crazy but he is crazy. why keep booking him. >> for sure. >> so didn't make any news yesterday. the one who did was colin powell. first of all, who former secretary of state, former chairman of the joint chiefs

who said that -- he came out very, very strongly in defense of senator haggel. >> people say that doesn't necessarily make him a good candidate for secretary of defense. i will tell you who thinks that makes him a good candidate for secretary of defense, the men and women in the armed forces of the united states and their parents. >> meaning, of course he will be the first enlisted man to serve as secretary of defense. and one of the few wounded in wartime and in combat to the serve as secretary of defense. then where colin powell really made news was when he we want on to say, this whole battle over chuck hagel, republicans versus republicans over chuck hagel is i will lustrative of what's wrong with the republican party. colin powell again. >> i think what the republican party needs to do now is take a hard look at its self and understand that the country has changed. the country is changing demographically. if the republican party does not change along with the demographic, they are going to be in trouble.

>> bill: one other thing that colin powell said that's wrong with the republican party, not only this inability to keep up with changing times, if you will, but they are still carrying around to many of them, a strong breed of intel intelrance. >> there is also a dark a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. what do i mean by that? what i mean by that is: they still sort of look down on minorities. >> so this battle over chuck hagle, eric, is really a battle for the heart and soul of the republican party. isn't it? >> you know, i don't think there is any question that at this point, every battle these guys are fighting, you know in a way is a battle for the heart and soul of the republican party at this point. >> this one in particular, because, you know, i had to ask five years ago, was chuck hagel considered a pariah by the right? he is being attacked, you know,

viciously, typically by bill kri krystal as an inappropriate choice and, you know, all of the usual attacks that they, you know, foist on the administration, simply because obama wants to appoint him. it shows you how far to the right that, yeah this party has gone. >> and also because he dared break with the party over the war in iraq, which of course, you know, god forbid. >> the neocons, this is the moment that they feel they can't have somebody in the -- a republican particularly in a position leading the penta goodeon who dares question, you know, their war, war, war as the om answer. >> clearly. >> iraq, afghanistan, iran. >> chuck hagel, i think, is known for being colorful in some of his commentary but, there weres -- there is no question that in my mind anyway most

americans would like to see a secretary of defense, that, you know, is much more interested in trying to work out a peaceable solution to the situation with iran than going to war virility that's what you want. it's why we don't call it the secretary of war any more or the war department, which i think we did up until world war ii. it became secretary of defense. you know, we had -- we had eight years of a secretary -- or six years of a secretary of defense with an agenda, you know in donald rumsfeld with wolfowitz. we saw what that got us in the bush administration, a lot of dead american soldiers and a lot of money spent. >> bill: what i find interesting and refreshing about this is that president obama obviously got a lot of flack over susan rice and decided that was not a battle he was willing to fight. and so when she said, i don't want any more -- any more to do with this, he said okay. i will accept. i am not going to nominate you. chuck hagel, he decided he is going to go to the mat on the

this one. i think he wins. >> absolutely. how does he not win? you know, it's him reaching across the aisle. he is doing exactly what he has been attacked every day, district attorney in and day out for the last four years, you know, by republicans for claiming that he is not doing, which, of course, you know which is reaching out, working with republicans, taking one of their own, you know, and not one much these country club old school republicans that i think really make up the vast majority of folks that colin powell talked about with his initial response with the tapping of the party. somebody who i think is respected but has some very conservative views, too. >> chuck hagel secretary of defense. at a time does speak -- and when we come back, i want to ask you about this, so that the one thing that chuck hagel does have in common with john kerry and john brennan and jack lew, the president's last four appointees is all four white males an the

death star, the giant planet-looking -- >> need 25,000 signatures? >> they got a response. >> no. >> they got the signatures. >> paul shacraw put out maybe the greatest press release ever from the white house it begins with: this is not the petition response you are looking for. the administration shares but a death star isn't on the horizon. here are a few reasons. the construction of the death star has been estimated to cost more than 85 -- google -- i don't know what that number is. it's more than a trillion. we are working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it. second, the administration does not support blowing up planets. third, why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars that could be exploited by a one-man

inauguration was one of the most anticipated events people very many seen in quite awhile. there was a purple tunnel of doom. i think this time there will be no purple ticket from what i have heard. >> my wife carol's sister and her husband were caught in the purple tunnel of doom. they were part of the crowd. they are coming back this year. they are from vermont and taking another shot at it, another chance. they should just put some tevez in the tunnels just in case. >> i don't think they are going to let people go in that tunnel. >> i am sure they won't. i am sure they won't. >> amanda, on the more important issues, the president, of course now has asked for a fight and is willing to fight the fight to get chuck hagel nominated as secretary of defense. i don't know how you read it. it looks to me like every day,

hagel is being up more support and the choices against chuck hagel seem to get more and more on the sidelines. how do you read it? >> they were strongest before president obama had nominated him because there were some people who wanted to prevent his nomination all out. now that he is nominated. a lot are saying look at the president's per rogrerogativeprerogative. he might not be my first pick but i will go along with him. you have some republicans that are saying they oppose chuck haggel, like senator lindsey graham. generally, it seems chuck hagel does have a solid sort of group of support and his supporters are, i think getting more organized and getting out there instead of pushing the case for chuck hagel. his opponents were mobilized early. it seems like he will take tough questioning but it seems more and more like he will get confirmed.

>> amanda, i am curious as to what you think about this, you know, i really feel a lot of it, the opposition to senator hagel becoming secretary of defense by republicans is because he is a republican and they don't want to see this president be successful with, you know, kind of reaching across the aisle especially to someone of chuck hagel's profile. do you think that's a valid kind of driver of what we are seeing from the right? >> i think that's an interesting point because, i mean, you are right that president obama is symbolically, the american likes he is reaching across the aisle to chuck hagel showing that he is willing to sort of work together whereas maybe congressional republicans aren't. and, you know, chuck hagel is someone who, you know, sort of up until -- in his fight now that republicans seem to like. he was one of the earliest republicans to sort of speak out

against the iraq war and was key to turning public opinion, i think, against the war which is where public opinion is now and sort of repudiated a lot of the neocons in the bush administration who are now working against his nomination. i think why they are opposing him is people hold this neocon view of foreign policy putting chuck hagel in as secretary of defense really mainstreams the fact that the iraq war was a mistake. i think they perhaps don't want to see that become their legacy. >> talk with amanda terkel for the great huffington post here on our "full-court press" this morning. follow, of course, all of the reporting on all of the different issues at huffington post.com. so the one. the chuck hagel nomination gets caught up, amanda, in the broader question and the

president gets credit for bringing powerful women in positions of great importance. secretary of state hillary clinton, hilda solis at labor, sonia sotomay or but his last four appointments to very powerful positions in the government, john kerr john brennan, jack lew and chuck hagel have been white males. is the president getting unfairly criticized for a lack of dye versety here? >> no. i don't think it's unfair. it's a scene that the president's cabinet may not be as diverse. he held up not only diversity in race, gender and in sort of experiences. for example, becoming secretary. but the administration said they looked seriously at women canday like susan rice to become

secretary of state there is a larger question here of why aren't there more prominent women being looked at in these positions? that may not be the obama administration's fault. it may be a fault of why aren't these women being promoted more to begin with why is sus afternoon rice pretty much the only person being mentioned for secretary of state? there should be more women since women make up more than half the population. it's getting better that they are at least mentioned for many. for many years obviously there were no women in the cabinet. but it's not good enough. i think the obama administration is saying we are noticing you are not putting women in, i think is important. >> amanda, why didn't we see the same kind of reaction particularly from the right, you know, when bush was approximatelypresident? i found it kind of striking

yesterday on "meet the press"that, you know, mike murphy and hailee barber were making shots. >> on diversity. >> exactly. it's just -- it kind of begs the question of credibility from the attackers. >> uh-huh. >> do you think it's a fair point? >> well, i think that -- i mean this may say a lot about the republican party but not as much as -- not as much as expected from the republican party when it comes to diversity. i think that hailee barber has accould the republican party is terrible b it comes to reaching out to women of color. it says a lot. president obama, himself, has held up the diversity of has cabinet as something sort of extraordinary. when you do that, you are setting yourself. >> good point. people do not expect it.

we look at the republican convention and sweep the camera across the floor. you have to look hard to find a person of color. amanda, the question final question i have for you is in terms of the president's agenda he certainly put a focus on gun violence. coming to him tomorrow the "new york times" reporting his first priority may be immigration reform. is it one or the other or both do you expect we are going to see the president emphasize in his state of the union and in his inaugural address and in his first actions to congress? >> well in the state of the union, you get a laundry list of things. immigration, that's sort of a big legislative fight that he is going to need congress on board with and republicans after the drugging ing they took, realize.

i expect immigration to be one of the biggest things. gun control, if he wants to pass an assault weapons bill. you have the republican house. there are things president obama can do on gun control where he doesn't need congress's support. prosecuting people who sort of lie on their background checks, you know, being more strict enforcing all of that. >> with congress i think, we will see a lot of focus on immigration. >> the president seems particularly for these first two years. amanda, good to talk to you. look forward to having you back in studio.

are going to end up on the short end of the stick here under a new afghan government. how does the united states feel about that? and the president it's up to the afghan people. on the other hand, we feel it's essential. >> if the taliban for example were to get in were to enforce sharia law. >> it is something for years has been a concern not only for women's groups but for this administration, for any administration. >> the u.s. is asking women in afghan society to participate, to step out on a limb to take advantage of the possibility pi what happens when the u.s. goes home and sort of left standing there and you have put your name out there and you have put yourself out there and it may be you are a target. >> you have been following this

calculation. >> republicans 2016 bid. future leadership of the party. there were a lot of concerns in terms of the people putting together votes on the think. speaker boehner will be able to sort of wrangle the votes that he needs. sort of two games in terms of strategy on the republican legislative front and one is kind of proceed business chamber of commerce republicans. job climate certainty. then the sort of political track what does this party need to do going forward. >> then there are still those out there who were able to kill

president george w. bushses attempts at immigration reform which, by the way, i always felt why almost identical to what was proposed. that was not by democrats but talk show hosts didn't want to see anything to do with it. the question is what to do about the 11 million people estimated who have been here and had jobs and families. >> depends upon what you package with it, guest worker programs visas, high school immigration. so, perhaps if it's put together in a way that appeals to enough cross sections, they can pull it together perhaps. >> yeah. it would be a queuecoup. margaret, i will see you at the ranch. >> this is "the bill press show."

going to do the young turks. i think the number one thing that viewers like about the young turks is that we're honest. they know that i'm not bs'ing them with some hidden agenda, actually supporting one party or the other. when the democrats are wrong, they know that i'm going to be the first one to call them out. they can question whether i'm right, but i think that the audience gets that this guy, to the best of his ability, is trying to look out for us.

maybe it was three weeks ago. perhaps the fastest task force effort in the history of the united states government. he plans to make his report to the president of the united states tomorrow. we have been talking to this issue. back in studio today. john lowey is the legal action project for the brady center. john, good to see you. it has. it's maybe not surprising because the solutions have been there. they have been there for decades. all we needed was political will. am strategy. to wake up the in case. enough is enough. you, among many meetings that the vice president had, he did have meeting with groups who had been long advocating efforts to

reduce gun violence in this country. no organization more out spoken on this than the brady campaignspoken on this than the brady campaign. >> all good things. evidence with that meeting with attorney general holder. there is just a great dedication to do anything significant on this issue. >> what would prevent another newtown but what would prevent most of the hundred thousand shootings that happened in this country every year. what would save the most lives. no doubt about it. serious, serious about moving. >> as fast as they can do. >> it seems what do you hear there will may be some executive

actions. >> a combination. >> the administration, there is a lot that they could do. there are stronger regulations that atf could and we think should have. to require some responsible business measures, execute meyers to prevent thefts and sales practices. background checks for employees of gun dealers. you can be prohibited from possessing a gun. there is no background check to see if you are possessing a gun every day as an employee of the gun store. so simple things we just don't do. and thisey could also get more of the background check records that are in the hands of the federal government into this system. >> now, i remember from our last conversation that the focus of your recommendations at the brady center is to do something about background checks, which you pointed out, is it still true that some 40% of gun sales

or is it -- do i have it backwards? >> it's probably more than 40% of gun sales take place in this country without a background check, no questions asked. i mean the number that we had going back a few years was 40% take place without a background check. that was before the internet explosion. >> uh-huh. >> that has exploited that private loophole even greater. >> so the ones that just so everyone understands, the sales that are not covered, right, where there is no background check. i sale my gun to peter. right? i buy one orsell one. all sales over the internet. is that true? >> basically we have two systems of gun sales. if you go to a licensed gun dealer, if you are a convicted

felon, you fall into another prohibited category. you won't get that gun most likely. that is legal under fred recall law. you can find that private seller on the internet or on a gun show or a parking lot or in a classified ad and buy a good gun no, questions asked. >> it would be as if our response to controlled substances would be you need a prescription to get certain drugs. go to a doctor and a pharmacist. >> if you don't want to do that you don't need a prescription and you can go to a person on the street, and that's legal, too. that would, of course, be crazy. yet that is the fred recall law for guns. >> what's the answer? >> the answer is simply to require background checks for all gun sales. california has been doing that for a number of years. there is still a lot of guns.

a lot of gun shows in california. all it means is that if you and i arrange to buy and sell a gun. we can strike a deal. then you have to go to the local gun shops and they do a background check to see if you are buying the gun, if you have a record and then you won't get the gun if you are prohibited. >> petei am going to buy peter's ak-47 or whatever. >> we have to go. we have to go to a licensed gun dealer and have that background check. >> exactly. so it does not prohibit law abiding people from getting guns. it doesn't prohibit private sales. gun dealers like that arrangement because it brings customers into their store. customers that otherwise wouldn't be going to their store. gun dealers make a lot of their money selling other things

besides the guns. gun dealers like this. law abiding people like it. 74% the number would be higher if they all understood that there is this gaping hole in the wall. >> so to close this and background checks. will that require legislation or is that something that can be done by executive order. >> we are very encouraged. gun owners and nra support. there is about 90% of the general public supports this. and it's simply not a winning political issue to be the candidate who has to defend why you fought for the right of items felonies domestic violence abusers.

no questions asked. i don't care what district you are in. i don't care how many gun owners are in that. you don't want to defend that at election time. >> do you think that is the single most important thing we can do to prevent gun violence or to reduce the level of gun violence? does the brady campaign believe that? >> i think it is, yes. there is a lot we can do. we are under no illusions that this is going to solve our gun violence problem. we are so backward in our response to guns in this country. so it's going to be a long struggle. however, that will do a lot. the brady law has stopped over two million dangerous people from buying guns at gun stores. if you now expand that. the effects would be tremendous. >> this is not only the most important but perhaps the most doable. there is also still a lot of talk, of course, about the assault weapons ban passed in 1994, two votes expired in 2004,

has never been renewed. senator feinstein has introduced legislation or soon will to renew it this year. the president has always said he supports a renewal. david keen the new president of the nra yesterday threw cold weather. >> you don't want to bet your house on the outcome, but i would say that the likely they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban. >> after newtown and whatever aurora, colorado? no assault weapons ban? >> you have to understand the nra leadership they are in the gun-selling business? >> they represent the gun manufacturers? >> represent the gun manufacturers and part of those sales, a big part of that market is trying to appeal to the people who by the way, may already have 10 ak-47s.

>> we see the spike in gun sales that's been so reported. >> that's what a lot of these sales are. people who already are heavenly armed and now they are going to be more heavily armed. it's a bad financial decision for their household probably to advance that much. it's great for public safety. >> that's important to know. the percentage of american house homicide that have guns has declined greatly over the past number of years and even when we see this spike in sales, it doesn't show an increase with that. >> you still believe and make sure i understand in this political climate an assault weapons band through this congress is still at least within the realm of possibility.

>> most of them think it's fine if he can keep my barretta or gloc pistol shotgun and keep my rifle and, by the way, keep many, many of such guns yet maybe do without the ak-47, an ar-14 for public safety purposes. most gun owners are. the candidate election time. i fought for the right to buy arsnals of these military-style weapons. >> that's a losing proposition. >> it looks like there will be action out of the congress and certainly out of the white house on this issue of reducing gun violence in this current tree. at the senter of that fight for a long time the brady center to

bark weigh says the background checks we talked about in the last segment. one problem is that many with records are non-violent stoners who got caught. what is it that shows up on the background check? >>. >> a criminal? >> you've got one strike against you and you had possession of marijuana. what is it exactly filters out through the background check? >> possession of marijuana probably would not prohibit you. the categories are if you are a convicted felony, if you are convicted of a crime of domestic violence which can be a misdemeanor, that's the one class of misdemeanor: that's not true. determined by a court to be dangerously mentally ill or unable to take care of yourself.

there are some other categories about non-resident aliens dishonorably discharged. that sort of thing. on the high-capacity magazines and clips. the news reports, that seems more feasibleply politicoly. that would be extremely effective. it would be betser to barn the the -- we have seen people having high-capacity magazines often 30, in the case of

>> the parting shot with bill press. this is "the bill press show." >> on this monday, january 14th my parting shot for today, the question: so what about video games? well first, it's absurd for the nra to claim that video games are not guns are responsible for the slaughter at the sandy hook elementary school. that charge will be true only when the first person walks into a theater or a school with an iphone or an ipad and ends up killing dozens of people. assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips are the real danger, of course.

at the same time, i don't think makers of violent video games ought to get a free pass either. there are too many games that involve nothing more than pushing a button firing a gun and killing as many people as possible. the more you kill in less time the higher your score. no, not everybody who plays violent video games will commit violent acts, but the nature of these games is surely one of those many factors that con contribute to the culture of violence we live in today. video game manufacturers, it seems to me, have to be asking themselves: is all of this violence really, really necessary to sell a product? i don't think so. on tomorrow's show randy weingarten from the american federation of teachers and keith ellison from minnesota. here on the "full-court press." have a good one. we will see you back here tomorrow. >> this is "the bill press show."
